About Swachh Bharat Mission (G)

The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on 02 October 2014 by Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, with the aim of making 'Clean India' as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary i.e. by 02 October 2019. The goal of the Swachh Bharat Mission was to provide a clean, safe and accessible environment, especially for women and children, by eradicating the shameful practice of open defecation from across the country.

This seemingly impossible task was accomplished by creating a mass movement at the grassroots level under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gram), which has been called the world's largest behavior change programme. As a result, rural sanitation coverage has increased from 39% in 2014 to 100% by 2019 and more than 10.28 crore toilets have been built in 36 States/UTs.
